Summary by Dave Cable, Director, TreesCharlotte
The third annual Tree Summit was held May 19 at the Mahlon Adams Pavilion in Charlotte’s Freedom Park. It was a great gathering of 61 attendees representing 30 organizations, all concerned with the vitality and future of our tree canopy. It does my heart good to see such passion and commitment.
Charlotte City Manager Ron Carlee spoke with us, and we talked about the accomplishments of the last year. Two speakers representing growers – Tod Williams and Alan Erwin – did a great job showing what it takes to produce the quality trees that we plant in Charlotte.
We had a policy update – don’t forget to write your legislators about the bad-news effort to restrict local tree ordinances – and took a look at Charlotte’s Urban Forestry management Plan. City arborist Don McSween gave us updates on the City street tree program and our least favorite insect, the cankerworm.
To round it out, I asked for feedback on a number of research topics we are looking at. It was a great Summit that sets the stage for an even better year when we begin our new set of events this coming planting season.
I want to thank everyone who participated. You can download Summit summary documents below.
Thanks for caring,
Dave
