Tree Lover’s Guide to Earth Month

Tree planting season may be over, but there are plenty of other ways to support Charlotte’s urban forest during Earth Month! Here are our top 11 ways to stay involved throughout April:

  1. Volunteer at a TreeCare Event

Volunteers will help maintain and care for trees that have already been planted by TreesCharlotte which includes mulching, removing stakes, and making sure the trees are healthy so they can grow and thrive in our community. Check out our Events Calendar for our current opportunities!

2. Visit the Independent Picture House

Join the community at the Independent Picture House for a day of film, learning, and connection centered around our planet on Saturday, April 11th from 10 am – 3 pm. We’ll be there as well, handing out tree seedlings!

3. Walk with us

Join a guided Earth Month Tree Walk to discover different tree species, learn how to identify them, and understand their role in our environment. Whether you’re new to trees or already a nature lover, you’ll leave with new knowledge, and a greater appreciation for the canopy around you.

4. Sign up for the Elizabeth 8K

Run the Elizabeth 8k! As a race beneficiary, we receive a portion of the proceeds. Not up for running? Volunteer with us to keep the race clean and green.

5. 4th Annual TreeFest

Celebrate Earth Month with us at our 4th Annual TreeFest at NoDa Brewing on April 25th  from 2 pm – 5 pm! This free, family-friendly celebration will be packed with trees, art, music, and hands-on fun. We’ll have tree-themed crafts, DJ, free tree seedlings, arboriculture activities, and an eco-market featuring local, environmentally focused nonprofits and businesses.

6. Read with us

Our next Rooted & Reading Book Club is The Overstory by Richard Powers. We’ll meet in June for our next meet up at Petty Thieves Brewing.

7. Nominate a Treasure Tree

Think you have or know of the biggest tree of its kind in Mecklenburg County? The Treasure Trees committee is excited to take nominations for new entries September 30 – April 30 for Mecklenburg County’s largest trees! Review the guidelines to see if your tree might be a candidate and then fill out the nomination form.

8. Learn to ID Trees

Curious to know what trees are blooming in April? Use apps like PictureThis or vTree to learn what’s around you!

9. Remove Invasives

Invasive vines like English ivy and non-native Wisteria can take over and even kill our native trees. Learn how to identify, remove, and replace them here.

10. Join the plant ID challenge with the North Carolina Native Plant Society

The Plant ID Challenge invites participants to find and identify 75 different native plant species across North Carolina during 2026. Participants must record their observations through NCNPS iNaturalist project and submit a completed form by September 1, 2026 to be eligible for a prize.
