TREES ARE
CHARLOTTE, BEAUTY, ADVENTURE, HEALTH, COMMUNITY
Trees are iconically Charlotte. A fast-growing city known for urban forests and green spaces, our trees root us to the past while providing a hospitable, beautiful canvas for the future.
There’s just one problem.
Our trees are disappearing.
OUR TREES HAVE SUPERPOWERS
TreesCharlotte recognizes that trees are more than a beautiful feature of our city – they are an economic driver and an environmental protector. They promote health & wellness, prevent flooding, maintain cool temperatures and increase property values. Trees hold swings and hammocks, provide shade for family picnics, offer fruit for picking, and foster community and togetherness.
THERE IS NO SINGLE SOURCE FOR
CHARLOTTE’S TREE LOSS.
Aging trees that are nearing the end of their lifespan are not replaced when they decease. High growth and development is removing others. And one of the biggest losses to Charlotte’s canopy comes from the removal and non replacement of trees on individual property. Because loss is happening through multiple channels, the care and replanting will need to come from multiple sources as well.

RESIDENTIAL LOSSES
AGING & DISEASE
Aging and disease account for a significant amount of tree loss in Charlotte. Some of Charlotte’s most iconic trees are nearing the end of their natural lifespan and are beginning to come down. A lack of diversity in tree species makes some trees more vulnerable to pests (bagworms, anyone?). Charlotte will need to address both of these issues to ensure that the iconic trees are well taken care of – and replanted for future generations.
GROWTH & DEVELOPMENT
One common assumption is that most of Charlotte’s tree loss is coming from commercial development. And while development does account for some loss, the actual amount is approximately one-third. These projects include both commercial and residential development across the city – particularly in fast-growing areas.
RESIDENTIAL LOSSES
The majority of Charlotte’s tree loss comes from the loss of trees on private residential property. This can happen for many reasons and the pace is likely increasing because of the impacts of climate change. Sometimes natural aging or storm damage can tear down trees. In other cases, homeowners take down trees due to personal preference.
JOIN THE TREE MOVEMENT
Here’s the most common question we get – can’t we just plant more? Yes! But the pace of loss means that Charlotte can’t plant its way out of this. That’s the bad news – but the good news?
Every single Charlottean can help protect and grow our canopy.
