This Cottonwood in McAlpine Creek Park once sat near another Treasure Tree, Boxelder #062, which has since passed. It’s located 700 feet past the start of an old trail to the north of the creek. It was nominated for State Champion in 1994 but lost by just three points.

    Ecological Value: The Cottonwood is actually in the Poplar family. It gets its name from the female seed capsules that produce silky white hairs, which resemble spun cotton. It is native to North Carolina.
