TREASURE TREES
#139 Yellow Poplar (Liriodendron tulipifera)
This huge yellow poplar stands near the back of Wing Haven Garden & Bird Sanctuary.
Long ago, a young boy built a fire on the backside of a yellow poplar, one of the largest trees in Eddie and Elizabeth Clarkson’s budding sanctuary - The Wing Haven Garden & Bird Sanctuary. By the time Elizabeth discovered the fire, significant damage was done to the tree. Distressed, but a nurturer by nature, she allowed the tree to remain. Now, almost 100 years later, that tree still stands as testament to the Clarkson’s love of all creation. This yellow poplar is currently over 6 feet in diameter and is still alive and thriving. Due to the fire, a cavity developed at the base of the tree, where you can actually crawl inside and look up into the top of the cavern.
