SUMMARY:Community Orchard at Faith CME Church
DESCRIPTION:Thanks to the generous support of Novant Health\, TreesCharlotte is partnering with Mecklenburg County Health Department\, Faith CME\, and NC Cooperative Extension to plant fruit trees on the church’s campus. \nThe purpose of the initiative is to develop an urban orchard in an effort to increase access and consumption of fresh fruits and vegetables for residents in the Hidden Valley neighborhood of Mecklenburg County.  Fruit trees will be planted and harvested by Faith CME Church parishioners and residents of communities surrounding the church. Food will be distributed according to criteria which is still being developed. Ultimately\, the program could be used as a template for other faith-based organizations to begin similar initiatives. \nTo ensure a safe and enjoyable event\, we are limiting the number of volunteers to 30 for this TreeDay. Register early as our events “sell out” quickly.  5 spots remain. \nVolunteer groups of 10 or more\, please contact events director\, Heike Biller to determine if there is enough capacity. \nTree planting events are great for families and all ages are welcome. To ensure accurate active volunteer counts\, please list all participants on the registration form\, along with children’s ages. Children 16 and younger must be accompanied by an adult. \nChildren activities will be provided between 9:00 and 10:00am by our community partner\, NC Wildlife Federation. \nTreesCharlotte is exited to partner with CupLux Coffee to provide our volunteers with delicious\, hand crafted coffee at our events. \nEvents are held rain or shine.  A modest rainfall actually provides ideal planting conditions. \nDeadline to register to volunteer is Monday\, October 28. \nOnce registered\, more detailed information will be emailed to you the week of the event. \nThank you TreeMasters\, we have enough help at this one and we’re just looking for a few more volunteers.

SUMMARY:Meet TreesCharlotte: Environmental Justice Forum
DESCRIPTION:Join Myers Park Baptist Church in Heaton Hall for a youth-led environmental justice forum\, featuring Mari Copeny\, popularly known as ‘Little Miss Flint.’ In early 2016\, then 8- year-old from Flint\, Michigan wrote a letter to President Obama\, describing the unending plight of her community\, who had been living with lead-contaminated water since 2014. Since then\, Mari has partnered with the nonprofit Pack Your Back\, has raised over $500\,000 to support 25\,000 children in Flint and beyond\, and has given out over a million bottles of water. She now serves on the Kids Board of Directors of NYC-based KIDBOX\, the first social mission-based kids style box. \nCome hear what ‘Little Miss Flint’ and young activists from across Charlotte have to say about the ongoing crisis and how young people can get involved in justice movements around the country. TreesCharlotte will have a table at the event. \nThis event is free and open to the public. All ages are encouraged to attend. For more information\, please contact Mia McClain\, (mmcclain@myersparkbaptist.org). \nOops! We could not locate your form.

SUMMARY:Feel the Fall Citywide TreeStore Nov. 9\, 2019
DESCRIPTION:Fall is a wonderful time of year to add the beauty and health of trees to your yard. Lucky for you\, we’re giving 400 trees away at our Feel the Fall TreeStore! \nWe’ll have a big mix of species\, from small flowering to canopy building to evergreen screening. There’s something for everybody! \nDid you know that fall is the best time to plant a tree?! Fall gives your new tree several months of cooler weather so that it can concentrate on root establishment rather than leaf production. And\, the fall and winter tend to be rainy – nature’s tree watering system! \nHere’s what you need to know:  \n\nEach Charlotte household is eligible for up to two free trees.  Limit 2 trees per address.\nTreesCharlotte’s mission is to help the City of Charlotte reach their goal of 50% tree canopy by 2050.  We therefore limit our efforts to expand the canopy within Charlotte’s city limits and limit participation to Charlotte residents only (unfortunately\, we do not serve Matthews\, Mint Hill\, Pineville\, Huntersville\, Davidson\, Cornelius\, other municipalities outside Charlotte\, or Mecklenburg County).\nProof of Charlotte residency (such as a driver’s license\, utility bill\, etc.) must be shown at the event in order to participate.\nA valid email address is required to register.\nYou will complete and sign a Stewardship Pledge Form (mandatory) and declare your pledge to take care of the tree(s) we provide.\nAt the TreeStore\, you will be taught how to properly plant and care for your tree(s).  Tree education is mandatory for everyone.\nWe cannot guarantee species type or quantities and will not know what will be available until the morning of the event.\nTrees are in 7-gallon containers\, range from 6-10′ tall\, and will not be reserved or transported.\n\nTreesCharlotte is a non-profit organization that relies on donations to be able to host events like this.  A suggested donation of $20 is greatly appreciated and would help us give more trees to Charlotte residents. \nRegistration is encouraged and will be open October 23 through November 5. Deadline to register is midnight\, November 5  \nRegistration does not guarantee you trees or tree varieties\, however\, it does get you a sneak peak (via email a few days before the event) of the varieties we hope to offer. \nWe expect to give out close to 400 trees on a first come\, first served basis. Expect long lines as this will be a popular event. \nThis event is supported by the Charlotte Regional Realtors Association and Coca-Cola Consolidated. \nRegistration now open \nVolunteers are needed to help move and distribute trees and mulch into participants cars.  Register to volunteer below.
