SUMMARY:Madison Park at Wallace Farms and Sinclair Place NeighborWoods TreeDay
DESCRIPTION:It was a beautiful morning to be giving away trees and planting in the common areas. View photos of the event on our Flickr page. \n  \nOur goal is to plant 200 trees in the Madison Park at Wallace Farms and Sinclair Place neighborhoods in Northeast Charlotte. Volunteers will be helping residents plant trees in their yards and in common areas in the neighborhood. \nTo ensure a safe and enjoyable event\, we are limiting the number of volunteers to 30 for this TreeDay. Register early\, as our events “sell out” quickly. \nTree planting events are great for families and everyone is welcome.  To ensure accurate active volunteer counts\, please list all participants on the registration form\, along with children’s ages and t-shirt sizes. Children 16 and younger must be accompanied by an adult. \nChildren activities will be provided during the event by the NC Wildlife Federation. \nNeighborWoods tree planting events are held rain or shine.  A modest rainfall actually provides ideal planting conditions. \nDeadline to register is March 13.   Click here to register to volunteer. \nOnce registered\, more detailed information will be emailed to you the week of the event. \nAfter this event please return to this page to see photos of the morning. \n  \nResidents \nIf you are a resident of Madison Park at Wallace Farms or Sinclair Place and would to sign up for trees\, please click here.

SUMMARY:29th Annual Elizabeth 8K Road Race
DESCRIPTION:The Elizabeth 8K Road Race\, which is presented by Harris Teeter\, Hawthorne’s NY Pizza and Bar and Novant Health\, will be held on Saturday\, March 21\, 2015.  This year marks the 29th anniversary of the Elizabeth 8K making it one of Charlotte’s longest-running events.  The race features a USATF-certified course and a fantastic tour of the scenic residential streets of the Elizabeth neighborhood. \nThe event\, which begins at Hawthorne Recreation Center at Independence Park (345 Hawthorne Lane\, Charlotte NC\, 28204)\, also includes a 1.5M untimed run/walk for the casual participants and younger runners as well as the Liz Kids’ Fun Run in Independence Park for the little ones.  Post race festivities begin in Independence Park and will be followed by an award ceremony and post-race party at Hawthorne’s.  Proceeds benefit the beautification of the historic Elizabeth neighborhood and the replenishing of both Charlotte and Elizabeth’s tree canopies. \nFor more information or to register for the event\, please visit www.Elizabeth8k.com and “like” us on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/Elizabeth8k.

SUMMARY:Seedling Give-away Preparation
DESCRIPTION:Response to our request has been tremendous\, we now have enough volunteers signed up to help with this project.  If you would like to help at another seedling prep event\, we have one scheduled for Monday\, April 20.  Visit the events listing to sign up and for other opportunities. \n  \nHelp is needed to prepare 2\,000 seedlings to be given away at CMS coordinated events.  This is a great opportunity for groups or organizations and for anyone needing school community service hours; appropriate for anyone eight years or older. \nVolunteers will soak seedlings in water\, wrap them in newspaper and place them in a bag\, then attach a card to the bag. \nSeedlings are bare root and very messy.  Come prepared to get dirty. \n \nThis is a drop in event\, any amount of time spent helping is greatly appreciated. Simply RSVP below with your name and number of people in your group.

SUMMARY:What Every Homeowner Needs to Know About Their Aging Trees
DESCRIPTION:Many of the stately trees in Charlotte were planted between 1911 and 1917. These trees are reaching the end of their lifespan and are potentially dangerous.  The Myers Park Homeowners Association has planned a meeting to explain to homeowners what to look for in terms of the health and structure of our trees. \nWe live in a section of the country where we are blessed with large tree species and adequate rainfall to make them grow.  If a willow oak is planted in a perfect place with no curbs\, sidewalks\, driveways\, water lines\, etc.\, it might live to be 120 years old. That is not the situation in a city like Charlotte\, so we need to take notice as they reach 60\, 80\, or 100 years old. \nWe will focus on older trees\, since they are the ones that are most likely to become diseased. We’ll show photos of before- and after- situations and discuss these examples. \nThe program will last about 45 minutes. There will be time for questions.  We encourage you to attend and invite anyone you know who’d like to learn more about this. \nWe’d appreciate knowing if you plan to attend so that we can be certain that our meeting room is of appropriate size. \nJack McNeary is a retired Consulting Arborist. He was president of the American Society of Consulting Arborists in 1992. In Charlotte he started his own tree service company in 1967 and operated it for 40 years. He has been studying\, observing\, and photographing tree issues in Charlotte since before 1989 when Hurricane Hugo visited us.

SUMMARY:Stewardship at Waddell Language Academy
DESCRIPTION:Check out photos of this event on Flickr here. \nTreesCharlotte is returning to the Waddell Language Academy campus to do some routine maintenance on the trees planted last year.  Volunteers will help with staking and mulching existing trees as well as planting a few new ones. \nTo ensure a safe and enjoyable event\, we are limiting the number of volunteers to 15.  Register early as our events “sell out” quickly. \nVolunteer events are great for families and everyone is welcome.  To ensure accurate active volunteer counts\, please list all participants on the registration form\, along with children’s ages. Children 16 and younger must be accompanied by an adult. \nEvents are held rain or shine.  A modest rainfall actually provides ideal planting conditions. \nDeadline to register is Wednesday\, February 4.  Click here to register. \nOnce registered\, more detailed information will be emailed to you the week of the event.
