SUMMARY:Nevin Community Police Memorial Park TreeDay Event
DESCRIPTION:Thanks to the generous support of the NASCAR Green\, Arbor Day Foundation and Alliance for Community Trees\, TreesCharlotte is planting trees in the Nevin Community Park and Police Memorial Garden.  Volunteers will be helping to plant approximately 66 15-gallon trees. \nTo ensure a safe and enjoyable event\, we are limiting the number of volunteers to 50 for this TreeDay. Register early as our events “sell out” quickly.  Only 25 spots remaining. \nTree planting events are great for families and everyone is welcome. SUMMARY:Let's Band Together Webinar
DESCRIPTION:Oct. 4 webinar focuses on cankerworm prevention\nFall is coming\, which means it’s time to start thinking about how to protect your trees from the fall cankerworm. Assistant City Arborist Laurie Reid Dukes will present a webinar focusing on the biology and ecology of the fall cankerworm (Alsophilia pometaria) and how to manage it in both urban and rural areas. This webinar is presented through the Southern Region Extension Forestry (SREF) Forest Health Program. \nWEBINAR DETAILS\nWednesday\, Oct. 4 at 12:45 p.m. (webinar starts at 1 p.m.)\nClick here for the webinar link\nPlease allow 15 minutes to set up your computer prior to the webinar. \nTree banding season is almost here! \nTree banding in November and December is an effective way of controlling the cankerworm. By applying a glue barrier to the tree trunk\, the wingless cankerworm moths are trapped as they climb the tree. For best results\, try to band your trees by the first week in December. \nHow to band a tree \nStep 1: Install a two-inch strip of cotton or insulation around the tree at least three feet from the ground and the lowest limb. \nStep 2: Position a band of roofing felt over the strip and attach it to the trees with the staple gun.  Avoid using staples on small\, young or thin barked trees. Instead use electrical tape to hold the bands. \nStep 3: Using disposable gloves and a putty knife\, put a film of Tanglefoot™(glue) directly on the band\, approximately 1/8” thick. \nIn order to be effective\, all trees need to be banded. The worms feed on all types of trees. Large trees (taller than a two-story house) are the main focus of banding. Small trees can also be banded. \nThe glue Tanglefoot™ should be applied after most of the leaves have fallen. If the trap becomes clogged with leaves or insects\, you should clean it\, renew the Tanglefoot™ or install a new trap. The bands can be removed during the first week of February. \nFind out where to get cankerworm supplies in the Charlotte area. \nDownload and print the Let’s Band Together brochure to get more information on tree banding and the impact of cankerworms in Charlotte.

SUMMARY:Hilly Chantilly 5K\, 2017
DESCRIPTION:The Hilly Chantilly is a not-so-hilly USATF certified\, family friendly\, chip timed 5K race that winds through the tree-lined residential streets of the Chantilly neighborhood\, one of Charlotte’s oldest center-city neighborhoods (established 1913) nestled between Plaza Midwood and Elizabeth. The course features gentle\, rolling hills that meander through the neighborhood – crossing no major thoroughfares – past Chantilly Park\, and begins and ends at Chantilly Hall\, near the intersection of Shenandoah Ave. and Pecan Ave. \nThe race benefits two Charlotte non-profit\, 501(c)(3) organizations: the Chantilly Neighborhood Association\, dedicated to working with residents and other center-city neighborhoods on preserving natural beauty in the city with sustainable urban living\, and TreesCharlotte. \nFor more information and to register\, visit the Chantilly Neighborhood Association website. \nTreeMasters\, if you would like to volunteer at this event\, please complete the form below.

SUMMARY:POSTPONED- 6th Annual Urban Forestry Summit
DESCRIPTION:Due to the uncertainty of the weather and its impact on the Carolinas\, the Summit is being postponed to January 23\, 2018.  Registration will open shortly.\n \nJoin us for this year’s Urban Forestry Summit. The goal of the Summit is to share in an interesting and interactive discussion of the topics most relevant to our urban forest. \nThe afternoon begins with focused sessions for stakeholders in the tree industry\, from 2:30-5 pm.   At 5 pm\, we’ll open the doors to the public for a cocktail hour\, where we’ll have demos from a local woodworker and two 30-minute workshops: “Right Tree\, Right Place” and “When to Call an Arborist”. \nAt 6 pm\, everybody will convene in the main hall for our main event: A panel discussion of local luminaries who will break down the Urban Forest Master Plan so you can better understand why it was created\, what its goals are and what we all need to do to make those goals real. Slated to sit on the panel: City Arborist Tim Porter\, developer Terrence Llewellyn of Llewellyn Development and community leader Theresa Rosa with Prosperity Village Area Association. Local meteorologist Brad Panovich will moderate. \nFollowing the panel discussion\, guests are invited to watch the documentary\, Felled.  Felled is a story about finding worth and beauty in something most consider to be trash. The film chronicles the journey of an urban pine tree downed by a summer storm and saved from the landfill by two woodworkers who give the tree new meaning as a family dinner table. Through interviews with industry experts\, sawyers\, arborists\, artists\, and woodworkers\, including both Norm Abram and Nick Offerman\, the film highlights the growing urban lumber movement and explores themes of waste\, craftsmanship\, and redemption. \nReserve your spot today! Simply register for this free event below.  Deadline to register is Sunday\, September 10. \nAgenda \n2:30-5:00 pm – Stakeholder program intended for industry related folks and will include small breakout sessions (space is limited to 70 participants) \n5:00-6:00 pm – Cocktails and light hors d’oeuvres\, stakeholders and the general public are invited for networking and socializing\, Concurrent classes – “When to Call an Arborist” and “Right Tree Right Place – Tree 101: all you need to know about tree selection\, planting and early tree care” \n6:00-8:00 pm – Evening program\, panel discussion focusing on Charlotte’s Urban Forest Master Plan and screening of the movie Felled \n(space is limited to 300 participants)

SUMMARY:NeighborWoods Application Deadline
DESCRIPTION:The NeighborWoods application deadline has been extended through June 1st! \nThrough the NeighborWoods program\, TreesCharlotte\, in partnership with Charlotte’s Housing and Neighborhood Services\, works with neighborhood groups in Charlotte to plant trees\, educate residents about proper tree care and maintenance\, and replenish the urban tree canopy. \nSuccessful NeighborWoods events involve strong participation by residents and are generally limited to communities in which at least 150 trees can be given away and planted. \nCharlotte’s Neighborhood Matching Grant (NMG) eligible communities can receive trees at no cost.* \nNeighborhoods needing trees but outside the NMG geography can participate in the NeighborWoods program through the Tree It Forward option. TreesCharlotte depends on corporate\, individual and foundation donations – all our trees are purchased with donated funds.  Tree It Forward neighborhoods are asked to contribute a portion of the costs of trees and the community event.  See NeighborWoods for details. \nThe tree planting season runs from October to April each year.  NeighborWoods applications for the Fall 2017 – Spring 2018 planting season are now being accepted through June 1st

SUMMARY:End of Season City-Wide TreeStore
DESCRIPTION:This is a Rain or Shine event.\nAre you a resident of Charlotte?  Do you need some trees for your yard?  TreesCharlotte is hosting a free TreeStore.  Each Charlotte household is eligible for up to two free trees.  Proof of Charlotte residency (such as a driver’s license\, utility bill\, etc.) as well as a valid email address must be provided in order to participate.  One of the missions of TreesCharlotte is to help the City of Charlotte and City Council reach their goal of 50% tree canopy by 2050.  We therefore limit our efforts to expand the canopy within city limits and limit participation to Charlotte residents. \nAt the TreeStore\, you will be trained on how to properly plant and care for your tree(s).  Tree training is mandatory.  You will then be asked to complete and sign a Stewardship Pledge Form with your home  and email address (mandatory) and declare your pledge to take care of the tree(s) we provide. \nWe cannot guarantee species type or quantities.  Trees are 6-10′ tall\, and will not be reserved or transported. \nThis is a first come\, first served event as quantities are limited. \n \n  \n \n
