SUMMARY:NeighborWoods Pre-Application Workshop - January 23\, 2017
DESCRIPTION:Through the NeighborWoods program\, TreesCharlotte\, in partnership with Charlotte’s Housing and Neighborhood Services\, works with neighborhood groups in Charlotte to plant trees\, educate residents about proper tree care and maintenance\, and replensih the urban tree canopy. \nSuccessful NeighborWoods events involve strong participation by residents and are generally limited to communities in which at least 150 trees can be given away and planted. \nCharlotte’s Neighborhood Matching Grant (NMG) eligible communities can receive trees at no cost.* \nNeighborhoods needing trees but outside the NMG geography can participate in the NeighborWoods program through the Tree It Forward option. TreesCharlotte depends on corporate\, individual and foundation donations – all our trees are purchased with donated funds.  Tree It Forward neighborhoods are asked to contribute a portion of the costs of trees and the community event.  See NeighborWoods for details. \nThe tree planting season runs from October to April each year.  NeighborWoods applications for the Fall 2017 – Spring 2018 planting season are now being accepted.  Participation in one Pre-Application Workshop is required. \nUpcoming Workshops: \n\nMonday\, January 23\, 6:00-7:00 pm – Landscape Management\, 701 Tuckaseegee Road\nThursday\, February 2\, 6:00-7:00 pm – Landscape Management\, 701 Tuckaseegee Road\nWednesday\, February 15\, noon-1:00 pm – Old City Hall\, 600 East Trade Street\nThursday\, March 9\, noon-1:00 pm – Old City Hall\, 600 East Trade Street\n\nFree parking is available at the workshop locations indicated. Additional workshops may be requested by calling 704-309-9441 or emailing chuck@treescharlotte.org. Learn more about NeighborWoods and how to apply here. \n*Check your eligibility for free trees in your community here. \nEnter your address or parcel ID number\, and your eligibility will be shown in the information bubble.

SUMMARY:Community Orchard
DESCRIPTION:TreesCharlotte is partnering with Mecklenburg County Health Department\, Friendship Missionary Baptist Church\, NC Cooperative Extension\, Mecklenburg County Park and Recreation\, and Rosa Parks Farmers Market Community Advisory Council to plant 22 fruit trees in Northwest Charlotte. \nThe purpose of the initiative is to develop an urban orchard in an effort to increase access and consumption of fresh fruits and vegetables for residents in the Northwest Corridor of Mecklenburg County. The orchard will be on the property of Friendship Missionary Baptist Church and will be part of a Mecklenburg County Park that is being developed on that site. Fruit trees will be planted and harvested by Friendship Missionary Baptist Church parishioners and residents of communities surrounding the church. Food will be distributed according to criteria which is still being developed. Ultimately\, the program could be used as a template for other faith-based organizations to begin similar initiatives. \nWe love our volunteers\, however\, general volunteers are not needed for this event.  Please check the events calendar for other volunteer opportunities.

DESCRIPTION:The Hilly Chantilly is a not-so-hilly USATF certified\, family friendly\, chip timed 5K race that winds through the tree-lined residential streets of the Chantilly neighborhood\, one of Charlotte’s oldest center-city neighborhoods (established 1913) nestled between Plaza Midwood and Elizabeth.  The course features gentle\, rolling hills that meander through the neighborhood – crossing no major thoroughfares – past Chantilly Park\, and begins and ends at Chantilly Hall\, near the intersection of Shenandoah Ave. and Pecan Ave.  The race benefits two Charlotte non-profit\, 501(c)(3) organizations: the Chantilly Neighborhood Association\, dedicated to working with residents and other center-city neighborhoods on preserving natural beauty in the city with sustainable urban living\, and TreesCharlotte. TreesCharlotte will be on hand race-day for a tree giveaway\, as well as other educational opportunities. \nFor more information and to register\, visit the Chantilly Neighborhood Association website. \nTreeMasters\, if you would like to volunteer at this event\, please click here.
