SUMMARY:What Every Homeowner Needs to Know About Their Aging Trees
DESCRIPTION:Many of the stately trees in Charlotte were planted between 1911 and 1917. These trees are reaching the end of their lifespan and are potentially dangerous.  The Myers Park Homeowners Association has planned a meeting to explain to homeowners what to look for in terms of the health and structure of our trees. \nWe live in a section of the country where we are blessed with large tree species and adequate rainfall to make them grow.  If a willow oak is planted in a perfect place with no curbs\, sidewalks\, driveways\, water lines\, etc.\, it might live to be 120 years old. That is not the situation in a city like Charlotte\, so we need to take notice as they reach 60\, 80\, or 100 years old. \nWe will focus on older trees\, since they are the ones that are most likely to become diseased. We’ll show photos of before- and after- situations and discuss these examples. \nThe program will last about 45 minutes. There will be time for questions.  We encourage you to attend and invite anyone you know who’d like to learn more about this. \nWe’d appreciate knowing if you plan to attend so that we can be certain that our meeting room is of appropriate size. \nJack McNeary is a retired Consulting Arborist. He was president of the American Society of Consulting Arborists in 1992. In Charlotte he started his own tree service company in 1967 and operated it for 40 years. He has been studying\, observing\, and photographing tree issues in Charlotte since before 1989 when Hurricane Hugo visited us.

SUMMARY:Stewardship at Waddell Language Academy
DESCRIPTION:Check out photos of this event on Flickr here. \nTreesCharlotte is returning to the Waddell Language Academy campus to do some routine maintenance on the trees planted last year.  Volunteers will help with staking and mulching existing trees as well as planting a few new ones. \nTo ensure a safe and enjoyable event\, we are limiting the number of volunteers to 15.  Register early as our events “sell out” quickly. \nVolunteer events are great for families and everyone is welcome.  To ensure accurate active volunteer counts\, please list all participants on the registration form\, along with children’s ages. Children 16 and younger must be accompanied by an adult. \nEvents are held rain or shine.  A modest rainfall actually provides ideal planting conditions. \nDeadline to register is Wednesday\, February 4.  Click here to register. \nOnce registered\, more detailed information will be emailed to you the week of the event.
