SUMMARY:Color The Canopy Opening Party
DESCRIPTION:TreesCharlotte is excited to announce a unique fundraiser to protect and grow Charlotte’s beloved tree canopy: The sale of 27 original Paul Simon paintings\, with all proceeds benefitting the non-profit. Paul’s paintings feature landscapes\, flowers and some particularly festive roosters. \nEnjoy a glass of wine and see all of the paintings on display at Paul Simon Men’s Store on Friday\, April 20\, from 6-8 p.m. \nMoney raised from Color the Canopy will go toward tree plantings\, stewardship and educational programs. As Charlotte’s tree canopy feels stresses from age and development\, TreesCharlotte engages community volunteers to plant thousands of trees each year at schools\, parks and neighborhoods. Since its start six years ago\, TreesCharlotte has planted more than 25\,000 trees with 13\,000-plus volunteers. \nRegister Here.

SUMMARY:NeighborWoods Pre-Application Workshop - March 9\, 2017
DESCRIPTION:Through the NeighborWoods program\, TreesCharlotte\, in partnership with Charlotte’s Housing and Neighborhood Services\, works with neighborhood groups in Charlotte to plant trees\, educate residents about proper tree care and maintenance\, and replensih the urban tree canopy. \nSuccessful NeighborWoods events involve strong participation by residents and are generally limited to communities in which at least 150 trees can be given away and planted. \nCharlotte’s Neighborhood Matching Grant (NMG) eligible communities can receive trees at no cost.* \nNeighborhoods needing trees but outside the NMG geography can participate in the NeighborWoods program through the Tree It Forward option. TreesCharlotte depends on corporate\, individual and foundation donations – all our trees are purchased with donated funds.  Tree It Forward neighborhoods are asked to contribute a portion of the costs of trees and the community event.  See NeighborWoods for details. \nThe tree planting season runs from October to April each year.  NeighborWoods applications for the Fall 2017 – Spring 2018 planting season are now being accepted.  Participation in one Pre-Application Workshop is required. \nUpcoming Workshops: \n\nMonday\, January 23\, 6:00-7:00 pm – Landscape Management\, 701 Tuckaseegee Road\nThursday\, February 2\, 6:00-7:00 pm – Landscape Management\, 701 Tuckaseegee Road\nWednesday\, February 15\, noon-1:00 pm – Old City Hall\, 600 East Trade Street\nThursday\, March 9\, noon-1:00 pm – Old City Hall\, 600 East Trade Street\n\nFree parking is available at the workshop locations indicated. Additional workshops may be requested by calling 704-309-9441 or emailing chuck@treescharlotte.org. SUMMARY:Community Orchard
DESCRIPTION:TreesCharlotte is partnering with Mecklenburg County Health Department\, Friendship Missionary Baptist Church\, NC Cooperative Extension\, Mecklenburg County Park and Recreation\, and Rosa Parks Farmers Market Community Advisory Council to plant 22 fruit trees in Northwest Charlotte. \nThe purpose of the initiative is to develop an urban orchard in an effort to increase access and consumption of fresh fruits and vegetables for residents in the Northwest Corridor of Mecklenburg County. The orchard will be on the property of Friendship Missionary Baptist Church and will be part of a Mecklenburg County Park that is being developed on that site. Fruit trees will be planted and harvested by Friendship Missionary Baptist Church parishioners and residents of communities surrounding the church. Food will be distributed according to criteria which is still being developed. Ultimately\, the program could be used as a template for other faith-based organizations to begin similar initiatives. \nWe love our volunteers\, however\, general volunteers are not needed for this event.  Please check the events calendar for other volunteer opportunities.

SUMMARY:Hilly Chantilly 5K
DESCRIPTION:The Hilly Chantilly is a not-so-hilly USATF certified\, family friendly\, chip timed 5K race that winds through the tree-lined residential streets of the Chantilly neighborhood\, one of Charlotte’s oldest center-city neighborhoods (established 1913) nestled between Plaza Midwood and Elizabeth.  The course features gentle\, rolling hills that meander through the neighborhood – crossing no major thoroughfares – past Chantilly Park\, and begins and ends at Chantilly Hall\, near the intersection of Shenandoah Ave. and Pecan Ave.  The race benefits two Charlotte non-profit\, 501(c)(3) organizations: the Chantilly Neighborhood Association\, dedicated to working with residents and other center-city neighborhoods on preserving natural beauty in the city with sustainable urban living\, and TreesCharlotte. TreesCharlotte will be on hand race-day for a tree giveaway\, as well as other educational opportunities. \nFor more information and to register\, visit the Chantilly Neighborhood Association website. \nTreeMasters\, if you would like to volunteer at this event\, please click here.

SUMMARY:Keeping Watch on Air Opening Reception
DESCRIPTION:The College of Arts + Architecture and the UNC Charlotte Urban Institute present the third year of the KEEPING WATCH initiative with a focus on local air quality and the role that Charlotte’s tree canopy plays in a healthy environment. Programming throughout the spring will include exhibitions\, panel discussions\, public art\, film screenings\, and community activities. \nThe opening reception on March 18\, which coincides with NC Arbor Day\, will take place from 6:00 to 8:00 pm. \nThe Projective Eye Gallery will present works from five artists: Jed Berk (California)\, Charlie Brouwer (Virginia)\, Linda Foard Roberts (Charlotte)\, Berndnaut Smilde (The Netherlands)\, and Robert Wiens (Canada). The exhibition runs March 18 through May 28. \nFloating throughout the gallery\, Jed Berk’s interactive “Blubber Bots” become a tangible metaphor for the air that surrounds us\, suggesting the mystery of what is in air and how we both react to it and affect it. Berndnaut Smilde’s wall-sized photographic image of an ‘indoor cloud’ from his Nimbus series will prompt a discussion of the need for healthy air inside buildings as well as outside. \nThe issues of mature tree canopy and clear-cutting will be addressed with the help of a life-size tree constructed in the gallery by Charlie Brouward. Likewise\, Robert Wiens’s large watercolors of tree segments will highlight issues of tree and forest conservation. Not unlike historical botanical illustrations\, these detailed watercolors bring attention to the individuality of each tree. Linda Foard Roberts’s newly created image of a grand\, mature tree will evoke the emotional attachments many people have to trees. Upright and healthy\, the tree reminds us of the longevity of immense canopy trees and their many contributions to a community’s well-being. \nIn partnership with the gallery and KEEPING WATCH on AIR\, Clean Air Carolina will present Particle Falls\, a public art installation projected on the side of the UNC Charlotte Center City building from March 4 through April 25. Artist Andrea Polli’s animation of real-time air quality data makes visible to the public the invisible particulate matter in air pollution. \nThe College of Arts + Architecture is grateful to media sponsor WFAE 90.7fm for support of KEEPING WATCH.
